We made a promise to our readers: we wouldn't review MMO games. The reasoning was simple: MMO games are hard to review for many reasons: an MMO's content at release can be vastly different a few months later and many facets of the game make it hard to write a high level review to name a few. However there is a popular trend developing in the gaming industry which seems to be forcing me to go back on my word.
More and more games these days are requiring a constant internet connection in order to play. Starcraft II and now Diablo III are a great example of a traditional game with single player and optional multiplayer features that has made the move to require you to be online. Other games such as Battlefield 3 have put methods in place to connect online before playing the game you bought. Others have resorted to seemingly holding back content to be offered via paid DLC content. All of these features which could be used to describe the MMO genre.
The trend in gaming is becoming more of a social experience. So what's are we to do? Pick from an ever-shrinking list of titles to review? I remember an old phrase: "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em". So I'm going to give the room a week to dry and then I'm going to finish painting it.
